CLAYTON NELL
OWNER/BROKER/CRS/RLI/NAR GREEN
A South Easterner, Clayton graduated from Virginia Tech in 2002, before landing in Chapel Hill in 2003. Chapel Hill’s fabled music scene inspired his move, and here he found good friends, a great wife, and a career in real estate. In 2004, he looked into property appraisals, and, within a few months, he was trekking across the state, appraising different types of property and learning the ins and outs of real value. Then, in 2008 a friend recruited him to join an innovative Carrboro brokerage, so he earned his real estate license. By 2015 he was a partner. And, in 2018, he and his wife, Blair, founded Boro Realty.
Those experiences give Clayton a welcome and uncommon insight that both buyers and sellers can use to their advantage: He understands not just how a piece of property looks and feels but also how it’s been built, how it has been maintained, what it might need, and how it will retain its value. “It gives me a different eye on the house, so that it’s not just a cookie-cutter commodity,” he says. “It helps keep buyers from overpaying, and it helps sellers understand what they have.”
In addition to his broad knowledge, Clayton is known for his determination and loyalty. His clients know that he’s got them covered, from all sides, and they can tell he likes his job. And, truly, he likes how real estate means that all of his days are different, how it often sends him for walks in the woods, and how he can funnel his social values into his business by advocating for solar energy and sustainable design. Plus, it offers him a flexible schedule that allows for plentiful parenting, as well as time for good hikes and trips along the river.
